Environmental Officer – Waste Management

About the role

The Environmental Officer – Waste Management will join Lumwana Mining Company’s environmental team to lead waste management activities across the mine site. Reporting to the Senior Environmental Officer, you will ensure compliance with Zambian regulations, Barrick policies and ISO 14001 standards while promoting sustainable waste practices.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and oversee solid, hazardous and medical waste management systems on‑site.
• Develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive Waste Management Plan.
• Ensure segregation, collection, transport, storage and disposal meet legal and corporate standards.
• Supervise waste contractors, monitor waste generation trends and report findings.
• Identify and drive waste minimisation initiatives (reduce, reuse, recycle).
• Maintain waste tracking systems and provide regular reports to the Environmental Coordinator.
• Lead waste audits, support external regulatory inspections and develop SOPs.
• Conduct training and awareness sessions on waste handling.
• Liaise with local authorities, regulators and community stakeholders on waste‑related matters.
• Investigate incidents, perform root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions.

Required profile

• Motivated and results‑driven individual with a strong commitment to safety and sustainability.
• Experience in waste management within a mining or industrial environment.
• Good knowledge of Zambian waste regulations and ISO 14001 environmental standards.
• Ability to supervise contractors and work collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies.
