WASH Officer – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions in health facilities and communities supported by Action Against Hunger. The role ensures safe water supply, functional sanitation infrastructure, effective infection prevention and proper healthcare waste management to protect vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Conduct water quality testing and treatment, and establish water point management committees.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Set up healthcare waste management systems, including waste segregation, storage, transport, incinerators, sharps pits and colour‑coded bins.
• Develop IEC materials, conduct KAP surveys and deliver hygiene‑promotion sessions to communities and health workers.
• Provide training, mentorship and supportive supervision to build local capacity for WASH operation and maintenance.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, partners and community structures to align activities with national standards.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in WASH, public health or humanitarian programmes.
• Demonstrated ability to work in multi‑disciplinary teams and with government agencies.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills.
• Fluency in English; additional language skills are a plus.
