About the role
The Welding Superintendent will lead the welding, fabrication, machining and structural repair programmes for the Heavy Mining Equipment fleet at Lumwana Mining Company. Reporting to the LME Manager, you will ensure all repairs meet OEM and company standards while supporting a zero‑harm safety culture.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and supervise welding supervisors, boilermakers, welders, machinists, engineers and apprentices.
- Plan and allocate daily welding resources across preventive, predictive and breakdown maintenance.
- Oversee welding and fabrication on haul‑truck frames, dump bodies, excavator booms, dozer blades, wheel‑loader attachments and related components.
- Manage line‑boring and machining jobs on equipment and components.
- Implement and monitor NDT programmes (UT, MT, DPI) to detect cracks or fatigue.
- Coordinate welding work with maintenance planners to fit scheduled downtime.
- Identify and introduce new welding technologies such as CNC plasma cutting, automated welding systems and drone‑assisted inspections.
- Control the welding repair budget, including labour, consumables and contractor services.
Required profile
- Advanced Certificate in Welding and Metal Fabrication or a degree in Mechanical Engineering/Metallurgy or equivalent.
- Minimum 10 years post‑trade experience in heavy earth‑moving equipment welding.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- 6G pipe and plate welding certification is an advantage.
- Familiarity with SAP or other CMMS for work‑order tracking.
- Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia.
- Unrestricted Class B driver’s licence.
