Firefighter – Mine Rescue & Firefighting

About the role

The Firefighter will provide fire‑fighting and rescue services on a mining site, responding to structural and wild‑fire incidents, emergencies, and hazardous situations. The role demands physical stamina, the ability to work in extreme weather, and readiness to handle life‑threatening events.

Key responsibilities

• Respond to fire incidents, road accidents, floods, bomb threats, spills, and other emergencies on the mine.
• Rescue trapped personnel, animals, and safely handle venomous snakes, reptiles, and bees.
• Provide first aid and basic life support to injured employees.
• Maintain, inspect, and test all fire‑fighting and rescue equipment, including fire hydrants, hose reels, extinguishers, eye‑wash stations, and emergency vehicles.
• Ensure all statutory inspection check‑lists are completed and equipment is ready for deployment.
• Participate in training drills, fire‑fighting lectures, and practical rescue exercises.
• Perform routine maintenance of departmental grounds and buildings to reduce risk.

Required profile

• Grade 12 certificate with credit in English and Mathematics.
• Basic Fire Fighter or equivalent FF1, FF2, or IFE Level 2 certification.
• Class C driver’s licence.
• Additional fire‑and‑rescue qualifications are advantageous (e.g., Leading Firefighter, SCBA, Vehicle Extrication, BLS, Rope Rescue, Hazmat Level 1, First Aid for Mining, IFE).

Required skills

• Self‑Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) operation.
• Vehicle extrication techniques.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Rope rescue / high‑angle rescue proficiency.
• Hazardous materials (Hazmat) handling – Level 1.
• First aid specific to mining environments.
• Firefighter certification (FF1, FF2, IFE Level 2) and related fire‑equipment maintenance.
