Senior Infrastructure Engineer – Improving Access Activity

About the role

Fika is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the physical infrastructure component of its Improving Access Activity in Zambia. The role will turn a community‑validated pipeline of sites into designed, procured, constructed and delivered Rural Networked Transport Infrastructure assets while building design‑and‑build capacity of government and private‑sector partners.

Key responsibilities

• Lead preliminary and detailed engineering design for trails, cable bridges, stone arches, short‑span crossings, feeder roads, drainage, culverts and access approaches to NCC and RDA standards.
• Assess technical feasibility of candidate sites, process survey data, evaluate aerial imagery and propose design alternatives.
• Calculate material quantities, prepare specifications and support procurement of local materials.
• Supervise construction teams, ensure quality assurance, ZEMA‑aligned screening, HSE compliance and handover of assets to district councils and RDA.
• Build design and construction capacity of government engineers and Zambian contractors through Fika’s accredited curriculum and Training‑of‑Trainers model.
• Represent the activity in technical meetings with districts, councils and other stakeholders.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in civil or structural engineering; registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Institution of Zambia and the Engineering Registration Board.
• 7–10 years of experience designing and constructing rural transport, roads, bridges or access infrastructure, preferably in donor‑funded or public‑sector projects.
• Proven experience with bridge and crossing typologies, construction supervision, QA/QC and FIDIC‑based contract administration.
• Experience building capacity of government engineers and private‑sector contractors.
• Familiarity with Zambian NCC, RDA standards and ZEMA environmental and social screening.
