Geo Tech Instrumentation Engineer

About the role

First Quantum is seeking a Geo Tech Instrumentation Engineer to ensure the quality, calibration, and reliability of instrumentation and control systems used in Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF). The role combines QA/QC oversight with hands‑on technical support in a challenging mining environment.

Key responsibilities

• Perform quality control and inspection of all TSF instrumentation, verifying installations against engineering drawings and P&IDs.
• Calibrate field instruments, validate sensor accuracy, and maintain a comprehensive instrument library with certificates and as‑built records.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for instrument failures, data drift, and corrective actions.
• Manage high‑reliability data transmission networks (LoRaWAN, satellite, mesh) and edge‑computing gateways.
• Coordinate with process and geotechnical teams to ensure data meets stability and mass‑balance modelling requirements.
• Adhere to health, safety, environment, and quality policies and relevant regulations.

Required profile

• Sound experience in telemetry and transmission architecture.
• Proficiency in long‑range communication networks (LoRaWAN, 900 MHz/2.4 GHz radio, cellular/satellite gateways).
• Expert knowledge of Vibrating Wire Piezometers, open standpipes, MEMS/shape‑array inclinometers, and magnetic settlement plates.
• Understanding of PID control, closed‑loop logic, and feedback system stability.
• Degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or related field (or Grade 12 with equivalent experience).
• Good safety practice awareness and ability to promote the “First Quantum Way” culture.
