Legal Counsel

About the role

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ) is seeking a qualified Legal Counsel on a fixed‑term basis. Reporting to the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, the incumbent will deliver legal and corporate governance services to the Board and Council committees, ensuring the Council’s interests are protected and its statutory obligations are met.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal opinions on agreements, memoranda of understanding and contracts to safeguard Council interests.
• Represent the Council in courts and quasi‑judicial bodies, maintaining its legal standing.
• Deliver secretariat services to the Board and committees, facilitating efficient governance and communication.
• Oversee investigations into complaints, supporting informed decision‑making.
• Draft, review and ensure compliance of legal documents with relevant statutes.
• Interpret the Nurses and Midwives Act and related legislation, offering authoritative guidance to senior management.

Required profile

• Full Form V or Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent.
• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
• Advocate of the High Court of Zambia and member of the Law Association of Zambia.
• Minimum four years of legal practice, including at least two years in senior management.
• Excellent command of English, both written and spoken, with ability to produce technical and analytical reports.
