School Counsellor

About the role

The School Counsellor will provide confidential, solution‑focused counselling to students and staff at Lusaka International Community School. This role supports the emotional, social and academic wellbeing of the school community while contributing to safeguarding and pastoral care initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Offer confidential counselling addressing personal, social, emotional and educational concerns for students and staff.
• Apply solution‑focused approaches to remove barriers to academic and personal wellbeing.
• Maintain confidentiality, disclosing only when safeguarding policies require.
• Make referrals to external agencies with consent and coordinate follow‑up.
• Participate actively in safeguarding, reporting concerns to appropriate authorities.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents and leadership to develop support strategies.
• Monitor attendance, intervene with at‑risk students and coordinate with stakeholders.
• Address mental health needs and connect families with resources.
• Use data analysis to inform strategies for emotional, social and learning support.
• Lead and evaluate PSHE initiatives, propose resource needs and produce regular service reports.
• Maintain professional memberships and deliver educational workshops.

Required profile

• Prior experience as a counsellor in a school setting.
• Minimum three years of counselling experience with children or adolescents.
• Therapeutic training or qualification for work with young people and schools.
• Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team.
• Ability to work independently, manage a caseload and use initiative.
• Empathy and understanding of social and cultural diversity.
• Maturity to exercise sound judgment.
• Excellent communication, organisational and teamwork skills.
