Senior Legal Counsel

About the role

Absa is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to shape legal strategy, support business objectives and manage risk across the bank. The role combines tactical planning, governance, and delivery of high‑quality legal advice in a dynamic, African banking environment.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute legal function objectives, strategic priorities and operational plans.
• Provide commercially focused legal advice, balancing risk management with business goals.
• Manage legal risk awareness, embed policies and ensure compliance with laws, regulations and internal standards.
• Oversee cost‑effective use of external counsel and legal resources.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk and business teams to deliver integrated solutions.
• Act as trusted adviser on complex regulatory, governance and contractual matters.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in corporate or banking law.
• Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision and guide junior team members.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making capabilities.
• Commercial acumen with a focus on delivering pragmatic legal solutions.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with business stakeholders.
