WASH Officer

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead water, sanitation and hygiene interventions for health facilities and surrounding communities. Working within Action Against Hunger’s humanitarian programmes, the officer ensures safe water supply, functional sanitation, and proper waste management to support health outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation infrastructure in health centres.
• Maintain functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish and oversee healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, incinerator and sharps pit construction.
• Conduct water quality testing, develop treatment solutions and support water point management committees.
• Lead hygiene promotion activities, KAP surveys, IEC material development and community training.
• Provide capacity‑building, mentorship and supervision to health staff and community volunteers.
• Coordinate with ministries, partners and community structures to ensure integrated WASH delivery.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in water supply, sanitation, hygiene or public health within humanitarian or development settings.
• Proven ability to work with multidisciplinary teams and local authorities.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills, with experience in community engagement.
