About the role

Action Against Hunger is seeking a dedicated WASH Officer to lead water, sanitation, hygiene and infection prevention activities in health facilities and communities. The role supports the implementation of safe water supply, sanitation infrastructure, waste management and hygiene promotion to improve health outcomes in humanitarian settings.

Key responsibilities

  • Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric wards, laboratories and immunization areas.
  • Support solarization of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
  • Conduct water quality testing, treatment and establish water point management committees.
  • Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centers.
  • Promote safe latrine use at household level and address open defecation through community interventions.
  • Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance in health facilities.
  • Establish healthcare waste management systems, including waste segregation, storage, transport, disposal, incinerator and sharps pit construction, and provide PPE and color‑coded bins.
  • Develop SOPs for waste management and conduct KAP surveys, IEC material development and hygiene promotion sessions.
  • Train health staff, community volunteers and volunteers on WASH, IPC and waste management, providing mentorship and supportive supervision.
  • Implement community WASH activities, promote safe water handling, strengthen community engagement and support risk communication.
  • Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance and mitigate public health risks.
  • Coordinate with Ministries of Health and partners to integrate WASH into clinical service delivery.

Required profile

  • Proven experience in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programmes within health or humanitarian settings.
  • Strong knowledge of water supply systems, sanitation infrastructure, infection prevention and control, and healthcare waste management.
  • Ability to train and mentor health staff, community volunteers and partners.
  • Excellent coordination skills to work with ministries, NGOs and other stakeholders.
