Laboratory Manager

About the role

SGS is seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead its Kitwe site laboratory. The role involves ensuring compliance with SGS quality standards, ISO/IEC 17025, and client requirements while driving continuous improvement and sustainable growth.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, organise and supervise all laboratory activities in line with ISO/IEC 17025 and client specifications.
• Maintain and improve laboratory quality management system, including document control, method development and validation.
• Oversee equipment, instruments and consumables, manage inventory, and coordinate re‑orders and replacements.
• Review and sign off test reports, ensure timely communication with clients and accreditation bodies.
• Conduct supplier evaluation, subcontractor management and ensure compliance with SGS Code of Integrity.
• Lead staff performance reviews, training needs analysis and recommend performance‑based awards.
• Coordinate participation in inter‑laboratory proficiency testing and implement corrective actions.
• Ensure availability and proper use of the Laboratory Information Management System (SLIMS) for data management.

Required profile

• Degree in Chemistry, Natural Sciences or a related discipline.
• At least 10 years of relevant technical experience in a testing or certification laboratory.
• Strong knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 standards.
• Proven ability to manage laboratory operations, staff and client relationships.
