WASH Officer

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection‑prevention activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. This role supports Action Against Hunger’s mission to end hunger by ensuring safe water, proper sanitation and effective waste management in humanitarian settings.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Conduct water quality testing and treatment, and establish water point management committees.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, incinerators, sharps pits and colour‑coded bins.
• Develop and deliver hygiene promotion materials, conduct KAP surveys and train community volunteers.
• Provide capacity‑building, mentorship and supportive supervision to health staff on WASH, IPC and waste management.
• Implement community‑level WASH activities, promote safe water handling and support risk‑communication efforts.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance and mitigate public‑health risks.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, partners and other stakeholders.
