Geotechnical Technician

About the role

The Geotechnical Technician supports the Geotechnical Engineer and Section in daily activities that ensure the safe and efficient operation of mining pits, waste rock dumps and related areas. The role involves collecting, monitoring and reporting geotechnical data while assisting with inspections, equipment installation and hazard mitigation.

Key responsibilities

• Assist engineers with routine inspections of pit walls, benches, ramps and waste dumps for signs of instability.
• Install, maintain and troubleshoot geotechnical monitoring equipment such as prisms, radar systems, piezometers and vibrating‑wire sensors.
• Collect and upload monitoring data, prepare daily and weekly reports, and maintain the central geotechnical database.
• Identify geotechnical hazards, recommend mitigation measures and support post‑blast inspections.
• Participate in geotechnical investigations after slope failures or rockfall incidents.
• Supervise drilling activities, core management, logging and sampling.

Required profile

• Strong observational and analytical abilities with high attention to detail.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to safety, risk assessments and continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Familiarity with geotechnical software such as Surpac and Rocscience Suite.
• Experience handling geotechnical monitoring equipment (prisms, radar systems, piezometers, vibrating‑wire sensors, data loggers).
