Superintendent – Drill and Blast (Technical)

About the role

The Superintendent – Drill and Blast (Technical) will lead the development and implementation of drill and blast designs, data management and optimisation initiatives to support the mine plan and downstream processes. This senior position provides mentorship, training and technical leadership to ensure operational excellence and safe practices across the drilling and blasting teams.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all relevant Zambian mining regulations and laws.
• Manage external contractor performance, monitor service quality and enforce contract standards.
• Plan, design, monitor and report on all drill and blast activities to maintain an efficient design process.
• Develop short‑, medium‑ and long‑term drill and blast bench master plans and schedules.
• Collaborate with the Geotechnical team to design and optimise wall‑control blasting techniques.
• Implement continuous‑improvement processes to enhance quality, compliance and overall mine productivity.
• Oversee electronic QA/QC systems (BlastIQ) for data collection, analysis and KPI reporting.
• Leverage existing and new technologies to monitor fragmentation, heave, wall quality, excavation productivity and downstream throughput.
• Define training, development and performance expectations; mentor staff and conduct formal appraisals.
• Maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
• Partner with the Group Drill and Blast Specialist team on improvement projects, technology rollout and training initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology/Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Relevant business courses (e.g., Financial Management, Data Analysis, Contract Management) are desirable.
• Valid driver’s licence.
• Proven experience leading drill and blast operations in a mining environment.
• Strong leadership, mentoring and communication skills.
