WASH Officer

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. This role supports Action Against Hunger’s mission to prevent hunger by ensuring safe water, proper sanitation and effective infection control.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Conduct water quality testing, treatment and establish water point management committees.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centers.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, incinerators and sharps pits.
• Develop IEC materials, conduct KAP surveys and deliver hygiene promotion sessions.
• Train health staff, community volunteers and provide mentorship for sustainable WASH operations.

Required profile

• Experience in WASH programming within health or humanitarian settings.
• Strong understanding of water supply, sanitation infrastructure and infection prevention.
• Ability to work with ministries, NGOs and community groups.
• Commitment to gender‑sensitive and disability‑inclusive approaches.
