Mechanical Technician – Heavy Mobile Equipment Maintenance

About the role

The Mechanical Technician will join the Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) maintenance team at Lumwana Mine, ensuring the dewatering pump fleet operates reliably to keep pit and sump water levels under control.

Key responsibilities

• Perform planned maintenance, inspections, servicing and breakdown repairs on diesel‑driven and electric‑powered dewatering pumps across the open pit and water‑management infrastructure.
• Strip, inspect, rebuild and re‑assemble pump components (impellers, casings, wear rings, shafts, bearings, seals) to OEM specifications.
• Service diesel engines – fuel, cooling, lubrication, turbochargers and engine controllers – and maintain mechanical parts of electric pumps, including couplings and bearing housings.
• Carry out shaft alignment, coupling replacement, vibration checks and priming‑system repairs.
• Monitor pump performance (flow, pressure, engine hours, fuel use) and record data in SAP.
• Support relocation, installation and commissioning of pumps and pipelines as pit levels change, ensuring safe lifting and positioning.

Required profile

• Full Grade Twelve certificate and a minimum Craft Certificate in Mechanical Fitting, Electrical or equivalent (TEVETA accredited).
• At least 3 years of experience maintaining dewatering pumps in an open‑pit mine.
• Ability to read OEM manuals, pump performance curves and mechanical drawings.
• Knowledge of shaft alignment, bearing fitting and mechanical seal installation.
• Familiarity with CMMS systems such as SAP (advantage).
• Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia and a valid Zambian driver’s licence (advantage).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
