Surveyor – Rural Bridge Infrastructure

About the role

Fika is seeking a Surveyor to lead topographic and construction surveying for its rural bridge portfolio in Zambia. The role supports government and private‑sector delivery models by ensuring accurate, high‑quality survey data for site screening, design, procurement and as‑built verification.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and prioritize survey activities with program managers and engineering teams, reviewing maps, aerial imagery and existing records.
• Establish durable benchmarks, horizontal and vertical control points using appropriate coordinate systems.
• Conduct detailed topographic surveys of bridge crossing sites, including centerline options, river geometry, approach profiles and nearby utilities.
• Process, back‑up and quality‑check raw data from total stations, GNSS/GPS equipment and digital levels, preparing complete survey packages for engineering review.
• Set out bridge components on‑site, verify construction control points and report any deviations from approved drawings.
• Maintain instrument calibration records, field documentation and geospatial data in Fika Collect.
• Provide field coaching and training to local engineers, surveyors and contractors on survey methods and data‑quality standards.

Required profile

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geospatial Engineering or Civil Engineering with a surveying focus.
• Minimum five years of surveying experience on bridges, roads or river crossings, preferably in remote rural environments.
• Demonstrated ability to produce topographic, construction setting‑out and as‑built surveys with high accuracy.
• Experience reviewing or quality‑assuring survey work performed by external partners is an advantage.

Required skills

• Total stations and GNSS/RTK or differential GPS equipment.
• Automatic or digital levels for precise elevation measurements.
• AutoCAD (and preferably Civil 3D) for drawing production.
• GIS software such as QGIS or ArcGIS, including coordinate system and georeferencing knowledge.
• Microsoft Excel and Word for data management and reporting.
