WASH Officer

About the role

Action Against Hunger is seeking a WASH Officer to lead water, sanitation and hygiene interventions in health facilities and communities. The role supports the delivery of safe water supply, sanitation infrastructure, infection prevention, and waste management across program sites.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric wards, laboratories and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems and expansion of pipe networks.
• Oversee installation of water storage reservoirs and conduct water quality testing and treatment.
• Establish and support water point management committees and provide maintenance tools and capacity‑building for sustainability.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrine facilities and improve sanitation in health centres.
• Promote safe latrine use at household level and address open defecation through community interventions.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance in health facilities.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems, including waste segregation, storage, transport, disposal, incinerators, sharps pits and colour‑coded bins.
• Develop SOPs for waste management and provide PPE.
• Conduct KAP surveys, develop IEC materials, train community volunteers and health workers, and deliver hygiene‑promotion sessions.
• Train health staff on WASH, IPC and waste management, providing mentorship and supportive supervision.
• Implement community WASH activities, promote safe water handling, strengthen community engagement structures and support risk communication.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance and mitigate public health risks.
• Coordinate with Ministries of Health and partner organisations.
