Artisan Electrician – Air Conditioning

About the role

The Artisan Electrician (Air Conditioning) will safely execute environmental and equipment maintenance work in the smelter plant, focusing on heating, ventilation, air‑conditioning, pressurisation and filtration systems. The role combines hands‑on installation, testing, troubleshooting and the training of staff while adhering to safety, quality and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Assemble, install, test and maintain HVAC, pressurisation and filtration equipment using hand and power tools.
• Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components with test equipment to locate and correct faults.
• Connect wiring to circuit breakers, control transformers and related components.
• Inspect units for hazards, defects and compliance with codes, advising management on safety risks.
• Test circuit continuity using ohmmeters, voltmeters and oscilloscopes.
• Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures according to specifications and local codes.
• Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to ensure correct placement of wiring and equipment.
• Direct and train workers on installation, maintenance and repair activities.
• Maintain a current ACU Technician licence and ensure compliance with governmental regulations.
• Perform other duties as instructed by the HT Drive and Environmental Equipment Specialist.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade Ten (equivalent to Grade 12) education.
• Craft Certificate in HVAC/RAC from a recognised institution, certified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority.
• At least 3 years of relevant experience as a qualified HVAC/electrical technician.

Required skills

• HVAC installation and maintenance.
• Pressurisation and filtration system servicing.
• Electrical wiring and circuit breaker connection.
• Use of test equipment such as ohmmeters, voltmeters and oscilloscopes.
• Blueprint reading and layout planning.
• Ability to train and supervise junior staff.
