Assistant Blaster for Surface Mining Operations

About the role

First Quantum is seeking an Assistant Blaster to support safe and efficient loading of blast holes in a surface mining environment. The role involves working closely with senior blasters to prepare and execute blasting operations while adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities

• Read instructions or diagrams, lay out drill patterns and determine depth and diameter of blast holes.
• Assemble primer charges using detonators, fuses, detonating cords and other materials.
• Load explosives into blast holes by hand or coordinate bulk explosives trucks.
• Connect electrical wires, detonating cords or fuses to blasting machines and initiate detonations.
• Handle, store and transport explosives and accessories in compliance with regulations.
• Report hazards, assist with blast area clearance and perimeter guarding.
• Participate in blast pattern clean‑up and explosive magazine inventory control.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent education.
• Holder of a valid Blasting License.
• Possession of a ZAQA Certificate.
• Ability to work safely in a high‑risk mining environment.
