About the role

As a Bit Grinder you will support the servicing of Sandvik Rock Tool Supply Performance Contracts in Solwezi, Zambia. The role involves delivering, retrieving, analysing and refurbishing rock tools while ensuring compliance with procedures and safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver rock tools and related products to designated sites daily, ensuring timely and efficient service.
• Retrieve worn and damaged rock tools from drill sites and transport them to the surface for assessment.
• Analyse the condition and failures of rock tools and discuss improvements with operators.
• Maintain circuit stock levels on each rig by replenishing supplies from the buffer store.
• Conduct thorough failure analyses of defective products and report abnormalities to the Contract Supervisor or Sales Representative.
• Utilise the Sandvik Report App to record and share operational data for advanced analysis.
• Perform sorting, gauging, cutting back, grinding, and colour‑coding of used drill bits.
• Refurbish blocked and bent rods, ensuring they meet operational standards.

Required profile

• Minimum Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, with a Craft Certificate of Competence, Advanced Technician Certificate or similar qualification.
• At least 5 years of experience working in underground mining environments with heavy equipment.
• Valid manual driver’s licence and legal right to live and work in Zambia.
• Ability to pass a pre‑employment medical assessment and hold a full physical & medical certificate for mining.
• Strong commitment to safety, excellent customer service and communication skills.

Required skills

• Basic computer literacy and use of the Sandvik Report App.
• Proficiency in analysing mechanical failures and recommending solutions.
• Technical aptitude for refurbishing rock tools (grinding, cutting, straightening).
• Familiarity with stock management principles.
• Ability to operate specialised reporting software and share operational data.
