Metallurgist

About the role

First Quantum is seeking a Metallurgist to provide technical support to plant operations. The role focuses on collecting plant data, analysing performance, and implementing solutions that drive safety, throughput, recovery and cost efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Develop daily strategies to optimise plant performance and meet KPI targets.
• Collect and analyse data from control‑system historians, online analyzers and sampling programmes.
• Coordinate routine checks on key operating parameters with the process operations team.
• Lead plant and laboratory testing aimed at improving safety, cost and performance.
• Perform long‑term optimisation of flotation operating strategies.
• Report safety incidents promptly and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Prepare clear operational performance reports for both upward and downward communication.
• Act as liaison between Process Technical and Geology groups.
• Support metallurgical studies, design testing and procedural analyses.
• Maintain data integrity from online analyzers (OSAs) and participate in shutdown inspections (ball mill, flotation cells, cyclones, samplers).
• Analyse poor performance, identify root causes and drive corrective actions.
• Assist in troubleshooting crushing, milling and service issues during back‑shift operations.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of complex metallurgical information and process improvement strategies.
• Excellent analytical skills to identify bottlenecks and implement testing programmes.
• Ability to supervise and train metallurgical engineers and technicians.
• Effective verbal and written communication for reporting and stakeholder interaction.

Required skills

• Experience with SCADA systems, particularly PCS 7.
• Familiarity with PI Process Book and control‑system historians.
• Proficiency in handling online analyzers (OSAs) and related data.
• Knowledge of metallurgical testing and flotation cell operations.
• Competence in conducting ball‑mill, cyclone and sampler inspections.
