Engineer – System Protection

About the role

The Engineer – System Protection is responsible for designing, installing, testing, commissioning and maintaining protection and control equipment to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the power network. Reporting to the Senior Engineer – Protection, the role plays a key part in safeguarding critical infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Design, install and commission protection and control schemes to optimise power system operation.
• Provide specifications for capital projects and adjudicate tenders.
• Witness factory acceptance tests, supervise installation, commissioning and site acceptance testing of turnkey projects.
• Plan and implement maintenance programmes for system equipment.
• Investigate faults, calculate protection settings for relays and carry out rapid service restoration.
• Perform engineering studies to grade protective devices and prevent damage to primary plant equipment.
• Update drawings for any modifications and ensure corrective measures are applied to avoid recurrence of failures.
• Deliver in‑house training on test equipment and modern technology devices.
• Control labour and budget expenditure and adhere to HSES policies and statutory regulations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
• Member of EIZ (or equivalent professional body).
• Minimum three years of relevant experience in power system protection.
• Strong understanding of power systems and engineering drawings.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
