WASH Officer

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the planning, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) activities within health facilities and surrounding communities. Working with Action Against Hunger’s health programmes, the officer ensures safe water supply, proper sanitation, infection prevention and effective waste management to protect public health.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water and supporting solar‑powered solutions.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Maintain functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) compliance.
• Establish and oversee healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, incineration and sharps disposal.
• Conduct hygiene promotion activities, develop IEC materials, and lead KAP surveys.
• Train and mentor health staff, community volunteers and local partners on WASH, IPC and waste management practices.
• Implement community‑level WASH interventions, promote safe water handling and support risk‑communication efforts.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and coordinate with ministries of health and other partners.
