Director of Communication and Public Relations

About the role

The Director of Communication and Public Relations will lead ZAYBRIF’s communications and public‑relations strategy on a volunteer, remote basis. Reporting to the Executive Committee, you will ensure clear, consistent messaging across digital platforms, press channels and partner networks to raise the organization’s visibility and reputation.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and distribute press releases and other external communications.
• Manage media outreach, coordinate interviews and public statements, and maintain relationships with journalists and key stakeholders.
• Collaborate with the Executive Committee, advocacy and partnerships units, and project leads to align communications with organisational priorities.
• Monitor public perception, guide crisis communication when needed, and develop communication tools that engage youth, partners and donors.

Required profile

• Strong strategic communication skills with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated experience in public‑relations and media relations, including building and maintaining press contacts.
• Proficiency in drafting press releases and other external communication materials.
• Experience developing communication plans for nonprofit, youth‑led, health or research‑focused organisations is an asset.
• Excellent written and verbal English; additional African or international languages are a plus.
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting, manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Comfort with digital communication tools and social‑media platforms used for outreach and engagement.
• Background in communications, journalism, public health, biomedical sciences or related fields (formal education or equivalent experience).
• Commitment to youth empowerment, health equity and inclusive, non‑discriminatory communication practices.
