WASH Officer – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Specialist

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection‑prevention activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. Working within Action Against Hunger’s humanitarian programmes, the officer ensures safe water supply, functional sanitation, and proper waste management to protect public health.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, including solarisation, pipe network expansion and water storage reservoirs.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation infrastructure in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems: segregation, storage, transport, incinerators, sharps pits and colour‑coded bins.
• Conduct KAP surveys, develop IEC materials and deliver hygiene‑promotion sessions to communities and health workers.
• Train and mentor health staff on WASH, IPC and waste‑management procedures.
• Implement community‑level WASH activities, promote safe water handling and support risk‑communication efforts.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and coordinate with ministries and partners.

Required profile

• Proven experience in WASH programmes within humanitarian or development contexts.
• Strong knowledge of water supply engineering, sanitation facility construction, IPC standards and healthcare waste management.
• Experience conducting community engagement, training and capacity‑building activities.
• Ability to work collaboratively with ministries, NGOs and local stakeholders.
