Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Tailings

About the role

This full‑time, on‑site position is based in North‑Western Province, Zambia and reports to the senior geotechnical team. The Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Tailings will lead the design, assessment and monitoring of tailings storage facilities, ensuring stability, regulatory compliance and alignment with corporate standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead geotechnical design and stability analyses for tailings dams and associated infrastructure.
• Plan, supervise and interpret site investigations, laboratory and in‑situ testing.
• Develop geotechnical models to support design decisions and operational monitoring.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, review technical reports, drawings and specifications.
• Ensure tailings facilities meet corporate standards and local regulatory requirements.
• Mentor junior engineers and support construction quality assurance.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of tailings management practices.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Geological Engineering or a related field; postgraduate degree is an asset.
• Several years of experience in tailings storage facilities, mine waste management or large earthworks within the mining sector.
• Strong understanding of engineering geology, geological mapping and geohazard assessment.
• Familiarity with international tailings standards and dam safety guidelines (e.g., GISTM, CDA, ANCOLD, ICOLD).

Required skills

• Geotechnical investigation planning and execution.
• Soil and rock characterization (laboratory and in‑situ testing).
• Tailings dam stability, seepage analysis and ground improvement techniques.
• Foundation design for dams, retaining structures and water‑management infrastructure.
• Engineering geology including stratigraphic interpretation.
• Knowledge of international tailings standards and dam safety practices.
