WASH Officer – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Specialist

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the planning, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection prevention activities in health facilities and communities supported by Action Against Hunger. The role ensures safe water supply, proper sanitation infrastructure, effective waste management and promotes hygiene behaviours to protect vulnerable populations.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Conduct water quality testing, treatment and establish water point management committees.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrine facilities and improve sanitation in health centres.
• Promote safe latrine use at household level and address open defecation through community interventions.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance in health facilities.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, construction of incinerators, sharps pits and provision of PPE and colour‑coded bins.
• Develop SOPs for waste management and conduct hygiene promotion activities such as KAP surveys, IEC material development and training of community volunteers.
• Train health staff on WASH, IPC and waste management, providing mentorship and supportive supervision.
• Implement community‑based WASH activities, promote safe water handling and support risk communication.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance with environmental safeguards and coordinate with ministries of health and partners.

Required profile

• Experience working on WASH programmes in health or humanitarian settings.
• Ability to work with multi‑sectoral partners and community groups.
