WASH Officer – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene Specialist

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection‑prevention activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. This role supports Action Against Hunger’s mission to improve health outcomes by ensuring safe water, adequate sanitation and proper waste management.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish and manage healthcare waste segregation, storage, transport, incineration and sharps disposal, including SOP development.
• Conduct KAP surveys, develop IEC materials and deliver hygiene‑promotion sessions to communities and health workers.
• Train and mentor health staff on WASH, IPC and waste management, providing tools for sustainable maintenance.
• Implement community‑level WASH activities, promote safe water handling and support risk‑communication efforts.
• Apply environmental screening tools, ensure compliance and mitigate public‑health risks.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, partners and other stakeholders to align activities.
