Superintendent, Safety – Mining

About the role

The Superintendent, Safety – Mining is responsible for ensuring that all health and safety legislation is fully complied with across the Mining Business Unit. Reporting to senior leadership, the role leads the H&S team, drives strategic safety initiatives and safeguards safe production in line with First Quantum’s global standards.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership to the health and safety team, setting strategic direction for H&S initiatives and programs.
• Develop, implement and monitor systems to manage workplace health and safety risks, including conducting risk assessments and tracking critical incidents.
• Maintain effective communication on safety matters with employees at all organisational levels.
• Implement critical control measures to mitigate fatal hazards identified through risk assessments.
• Ensure compliance with the Mineral Regulatory Commission (MRC) management systems and other relevant regulations.
• Conduct scheduled audits and inspections to verify safe working practices and identify improvement areas.
• Monitor performance indicators, identify emerging safety issues and take corrective actions.
• Liaise with government bodies such as the Ministry of Labour and Zambia Police Service.
• Coordinate occupational health surveillance programmes and promote health‑wellness initiatives.

Required profile

• Degree or Diploma in mining or another engineering discipline.
• Post‑graduate qualification in Health and Safety (mandatory).
• At least 8 years of senior‑level health and safety management experience, preferably in an open‑pit copper mining environment.
• Experience managing large H&S teams.
• All qualifications must be certified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
