Principal Accountant

About the role

The Principal Accountant will support the Finance Manager in overseeing all financial and accounting activities of the agency. This senior position ensures that transactions comply with approved accounting standards and that the agency’s liquidity, expenditures, and operational efficiency are accurately monitored.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in supervising finance department activities and ensure accurate liquidity reporting across regional offices.
• Develop, maintain, and implement financial and management accounting procedures, including revenue collection.
• Maintain proper books of accounts, supervise reconciliations, and resolve imbalances.
• Prepare and consolidate budgets, cash‑flow forecasts, cost‑analysis reports, and expense statements for head office and regional offices.
• Process staff salary payments, statutory deductions (NAPSA, insurance, pension, loans, advances).
• Facilitate certification and ratification of financial statements, approve purchase commitments and cheques within budget limits.
• Analyse statistical data, produce departmental performance reports, and recommend procedural improvements.
• Manage treasury functions, investing surplus funds in low‑risk markets.
• Resolve administrative issues related to staff discipline, motivation, and development.

Required profile

• Grade 12 (University entrance) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting/Finance.
• Professional qualification such as ACCA, ACA, ZICA or equivalent.
• Minimum five (5) years of post‑qualification experience in public finance or a similar environment.
• Strong knowledge of the Public Finance Act and related policy directions.
