Associate Program Director, Health Systems Strengthening

About the role

The Associate Program Director, Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) will lead CHAI Zambia’s HSS cluster, driving initiatives that reinforce the Zambian health system across multiple building blocks. Reporting to the Country Director, this senior position oversees a multidisciplinary team and ensures alignment with national health priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the HSS cluster, including health workforce, health financing, assistive technology, and medical oxygen programs.
• Develop and implement country‑specific health system strengthening strategies in partnership with government and private sector stakeholders.
• Manage and mentor staff, fostering a collaborative and results‑oriented environment.
• Monitor program performance, ensure data‑driven decision‑making, and report outcomes to senior leadership.
• Represent CHAI in high‑level meetings, advocating for sustainable health system solutions.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in public health, health policy, health economics, or a related field.
• Extensive experience (typically 8+ years) in health systems strengthening, preferably in low‑ and middle‑income country contexts.
• Proven track record of leading multi‑disciplinary teams and managing complex health programs.
• Strong understanding of Zambian health policies and the broader African health landscape.
