Blast Hole Drill Rig Mechanic

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Blast Hole Drill Rig Mechanic to join our mining team. The role involves maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing heavy‑duty blast hole drilling equipment used in open‑cast mining operations.

Key responsibilities

• Perform routine and corrective maintenance on blast hole drill rigs, rotary drills and DTH equipment.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic and pneumatic system faults.
• Service heavy‑duty diesel engines and associated components.
• Troubleshoot electrical and electronic control systems and interpret schematics.
• Ensure compliance with safety procedures, including LOTO and confined‑space entry.
• Prepare maintenance reports and coordinate with operators and supervisors.

Required profile

• Recognised Diesel Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic trade certificate (or equivalent).
• Full Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 qualification.
• 3–5 years proven experience with blast hole drill rigs in an open‑cast mining environment.
• Valid First Aid certificate and relevant mining safety certifications.
• Valid driver’s licence (Code EB or equivalent) and physical fitness for demanding conditions.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Hydraulic systems maintenance and fault diagnosis.
• Pneumatic systems maintenance.
• Diesel engine repair and servicing.
• Electrical and electronic control system troubleshooting.
• Reading and interpreting hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical schematics.
• OEM certifications (e.g., Sandvik, Epiroc/Atlas Copco, Schramm) – advantageous.
• Hydraulic fitting and auto‑electrical certifications – desirable.
• First Aid, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and confined‑space entry procedures.
