WASH Officer – Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection‑prevention activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. The role supports Action Against Hunger’s mission to end hunger by ensuring safe water and sanitation services that protect health and improve resilience.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunization areas.
• Support solar‑powered water solutions, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Conduct water quality testing, treatment and establish water point management committees.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Set up healthcare waste management systems, including waste segregation, storage, transport, incinerators, sharps pits and provision of PPE.
• Develop and deliver hygiene promotion activities, KAP surveys, IEC materials and training for community volunteers and health workers.
• Provide capacity‑building, mentorship and supervision to local staff and community structures.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, partners and apply environmental safeguards.

Required profile

• Proven experience in water supply, sanitation and hygiene programmes within health settings.
• Knowledge of infection‑prevention and control (IPC) standards and healthcare waste management.
• Experience working with community‑based WASH interventions and gender‑inclusive facilities.
• Ability to collaborate with ministries, NGOs and other partners.
