WASH Officer

About the role

The WASH Officer will lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of water, sanitation, hygiene and infection‑prevention activities in health facilities and surrounding communities. Working within Action Against Hunger’s humanitarian programmes, the officer ensures safe water supply, functional sanitation, and proper waste management to protect public health.

Key responsibilities

• Rehabilitate and upgrade water supply systems in health facilities, ensuring continuous running water in OPD, maternity, pediatric, laboratory and immunisation areas.
• Support solarisation of water systems, expand pipe networks and install water storage reservoirs.
• Construct gender‑segregated, disability‑inclusive latrines and improve sanitation facilities in health centres.
• Ensure functional hand‑washing stations, provide soap and alcohol‑based hand rubs, and strengthen IPC compliance.
• Establish healthcare waste management systems, including segregation, storage, transport, incinerator and sharps pit construction.
• Conduct water quality testing, develop IEC materials, run KAP surveys and deliver hygiene‑promotion sessions.
• Train health staff, community volunteers and local partners on WASH, IPC and waste‑management best practices.
• Coordinate with ministries of health, NGOs and other partners to align WASH activities with national standards.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in water supply, sanitation, hygiene or public health within humanitarian or development contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to work with multi‑disciplinary teams and community groups.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills.
